Beginning on January 7th, 2019, Google Calendar will be phasing out one of its older features. SMS, or text, notifications will no longer be supported with Google Calendar. Instead, users currently set to receive these notifications will automatically be opted-in to receive in-app and email notifications for various Calendar activities. Continue reading to see how these changes will specifically affect these users.
Nothing will change for users who do not have text message notifications enabled.
Users will receive event notifications in their web browser if they have their calendar open, or natively on their smartphones if you have the Google Calendar app for Android or iOS. Important to note, users may need to turn on these notifications in their device settings if they had previously disabled them. Please refer to the end of the article for step-by-step guides on how to enable these.Additionally, users will also receive email notifications for new events, changed events, cancelled events, and event responses instead of the text message that they had been receiving prior to these changes.
How to enable Calendar notifications on iOS and Android devices within Google Calendar:
In the top left, tap Menu.
Open the Google Calendar app.
At the bottom, tap Settings.
